Chapter Twenty—Gray
I chuckled at Chloe as she came out of the bathroom, a towel wrapped around her hair and the waistband of my sweats gathered in one fist. “Nothing short of a miracle and a roll of duct tape is going to keep these on.”
She reminded me of a little kid playing dress up. The pants bagged at her ankles and her wrists were lost in the long sleeves. To me, she was utterly adorable and I felt myself lose another piece of my heart to her.
She shuffled toward me, never dropping her death grip on the top of the pants. Part of me wished she would. The other part wanted to get that roll of duct tape and make sure I wasn’t led into temptation.
“I threw your clothes in the washer. They were too muddy for the dryer.” Which meant two hours of her shuffling around in my oversize clothes. “I have a robe that’s always been a bit small on me,” he said. “Maybe that would work better?”
“If I’m going to be here for a while, that’d probably be good.” Chloe’s eyes sparkled with mischief. She pulled the towel from her hair with her free hand and finger combed it back from her face.
“There’s a hair dryer under the sink in the bathroom. And the robe’s on the back of the closet door in the bedroom.” I pointed in the direction of the bedroom. Lord knew, I didn’t trust myself to lead her there.
Ten minutes later, she returned with dry hair and the robe tightly belted around her body, the sleeves rolled up to her elbows. I regularly forgot how small she really was. How utterly masculine she made me feel. “There’s coffee,” I said.
“Anything to eat?” she asked. “I’m starving.”
I shrugged. “Cold cuts?”
Her nose turned up.
“Sorry. Haven’t been to the grocery lately.”
Chloe poked her nose into the cabinet to the left of the sink. “I could make cookies?” she offered.
“I have the ingredients for cookies?” If so, elves must have left them, because I certainly hadn’t shopped for them. I wouldn’t know how to make cookies even if I wanted to.
Chloe nodded. “I brought stuff over when you were sick, but I never got around to making them.”
“At the risk of you changing your mind—you know how much I love your cookies—you don’t have to do that.”
“What else are we going to do for the next two hours while my clothes dry?” She reached into the cabinet and my robe gapped at the front as the hem rose above her knees.
I swallowed hard, knowing I would never repeat the suggestions that quickly ran through my head. She lifted a knowing eyebrow. “Cookies it is,” I said, torn between the heat flaring in her eyes, and the knowledge that I would only hurt her.
